Maine farmer leads organic growers’ continued fig

BRIDGEWATER, Maine — Organic farmers will appeal a case dismissed in February that pitted them against corporate agriculture giant Monsanto in federal court.
The group that brought the lawsuit is the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, which is headed by Maine potato-seed farmer Jim Gerritsen of Bridgewater.
“We want to believe that the system will work for us Windows 7 Serial,” Gerritsen said Thursday.
Monsanto is a leading global provider of technology-based solutions and agricultural products, according to its website, and one of its products is genetically modified, or transgenic, seeds. Activist groups across the world have lobbied against genetically modified seeds, calling them unsafe for human consumption and saying that they weaken or destroy other seeds and crops.
Gerritsen said that Monsanto defends those seeds and claims patent infringement by organic farmers whose produce becomes contaminated from modified seed that drifts onto their fields. The lawsuit sought to challenge the constitutionality of Monsanto’s seed patents and to protect farmers accused of stealing patented seed.
Organic crops can be contaminated by wind drift of pollen from transgenic crops such as corn. Maine allows farmers to grow transgenic corn.
Gerritsen said that if a neighbor raised a transgenic crop such as corn and the wind blew the pollen onto his organic farm, it could contaminate his crops.
The suit originally was filed in March 2011 by the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association and 83 agricultural and consumer groups. In February, U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald of the Southern District of New York dismissed the lawsuit before it went to trial.
The court ruling said there was no likelihood that Monsanto would pursue patent-infringement cases against the organic farmers, who have no interest in using the company’s patented seed products.
Gerritsen maintained that growers have a right not to be invaded by something that would be catastrophic to their businesses and families. He also said that virtually all of the 83 farmers represented in the initial suit are joining the appeal.
Wood Prairie Farm is a certified organic family farm producing seed and specialty potatoes Windows 7 oem key, including the award-winning Prairie Blush variety discovered by Jim and Megan Gerritsen Microsoft Windows 7 Key, plus vegetable and grain seed. The farm has customers in all 50 states.
He said that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., will not be able to hear the case until this fall or winter.
“We filed this suit a year ago because farmers and their families need justice,” he said Thursday. “We did not get justice, so we will keep fighting.”

NRHM Scam Former UP Health Secretary Arrested
News Desk: The CBI on Thursday arrested former Principal Health Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Pradeep Shukla, in Lucknow in connection with the massive National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam.
Shukla was arrested at the Lucknow airport while he was boarding to Delhi.
His arrest comes two days after former Lucknow chief medical officer (CMO) Dr AK Shukla was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in the health scam and conspiring to kill two CMOs.
The former secretary was arrested on the basis of the statement by former family welfare minister Babu Singh Kushwaha replica watches, who was likely get a ticket from the BJP during assembly polls.
Kushwaha replica watches, who is currently in jail for his role in the massive health scam replica watches, alleged that senior officers of the health department including Pradeep Shukla had signed all the papers for payments.
China acts to boost loans, bolster flagging econom
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s central bank cut the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves on Saturday, freeing an estimated 400 billion yuan ($63.5 billion) for lending to head-off the risk of a sudden slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy.
The People’s Bank of China delivered a 50 basis point cut in banks’ reserve requirement ratio (RRR), effective from May 18, the third cut in six months and one that investors had called for after data on Friday showed the economy weakening, not recovering, from its slowest quarter of growth in three years.
Industrial production weakened sharply in April and fixed asset investment – a key growth driver – hit its lowest level in nearly a decade, surprising many economists who thought Q1’s 8.1 percent annual rate of growth marked the bottom of a downswing and were expecting signs of recovery in Q2 data.
“The central bank should have cut RRR after Q1 data. It has missed the best timing,” Dong Xian’an, chief economist at Peking First Advisory in Beijing, told Reuters.
“A cut today will have a much discounted impact. So the Chinese economy will become more vulnerable to global weakness and the slowing Chinese economy will in turn have a bigger negative impact on global recovery. Uncertainties in the global and Chinese economy are rising,” he said.
The domestic production and investment data had followed hot on the heels of weaker than forecast trade data, with the annual rate of export growth around half the level expected and growth in imports grinding to a halt on a nominal basis in April, underlining China’s vulnerability to weakness in global demand for goods produced in the country’s vast factory sector.
Bank lending in April was also sharply below forecast at 681.8 billion yuan ($108.04 billion), missing the 800 billion consensus call and raising doubts about whether Beijing had policy settings slack enough to keep the economy expanding.
“It confirms our view that the economy was not able to sustain its momentum on current policy and policy needs to be loosened Best Tattoo Guns,” said Ken Peng Homemade Tattoo Guns, an economist with BNP Paribas.
“The fact that it waited so long meant it could have been responsible for the poor data in April. This sends a very positive signal that policymakers are accommodative.”
FURTHER LOOSENING FORECAST
The cut of RRR to 20.0 percent from 20.5 percent for big banks still has analysts forecasting another 800 billion yuan’s worth of cuts to have been earmarked for the rest of the year.
The central bank announced its first cut in RRR in three years on November 30 last year. That move took the rate down from a record 21.5 percent. The second cut in this easing cycle was delivered in February.
Lowering RRR for banks helps China offset sluggish capital inflows that have been hit by skittish investors wary of investing their funds in higher-risk emerging markets at a time of global economic uncertainty driven mainly by Europe’s festering debt crisis.
Crucially, an RRR cut would help Beijing meet its target of growing money supply by 14 percent in 2012. Data on Friday showed annual M2 money supply growth running at just 12.8 percent in April.
China’s bank lending had trumped forecasts to spike to 1.01 trillion yuan ($160 billion) in March, a sign of fresh traction in Beijing’s bid to boost credit creation to support the cooling economy.
The surge in lending was the biggest monthly extension of credit since January 2011, when new loans last topped 1 trillion yuan Tattooing Machines, holding out hope that China’s economy would not only avoid a hard landing but pick up speed again later this year.
Chinese leaders, however, are wary about inflation risks given rising global commodity prices and remain determined to cool down the property sector to ward off a speculative bubble.
The deep-pocketed government has also cut taxes for small firms, which are vital for generating economic growth and jobs, to help them cope with a credit squeeze and weaker exports.
But the bigger problem for the economy may not be the supply of credit but demand for it, given that the European Union – China’s single biggest export market – is battling recession again, consumers in the United States are still paying down debt and China’s domestic demand is looking limp.
That implies to some that policy has to become looser still.
“The problem is corporate loan demand is very weak right now, so the cut is not as good as an interest rate cut, since reducing banks reserves doesn’t change the price of loans,” said Liu Junyu, a money market analyst at China Merchants Bank in Shenzhen.
“If the economy continues to be sluggish, it is very likely that the government will choose to cut interest rates.” ($1 = 6.3106 Chinese yuan)

Conserving Fresh Water Will Require Global Collabo
A great irony of living on the ‘Blue Planet’ is that while over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, humans can only use less than one percent of it easily.
As the world continues to develop economically, demand will increase for reliable access to energy and water. Countries increasingly recognise the need for energy security. However, the connection between energy and water is not as well understood or appreciated.
The reality is that both energy and water are critical to human development and are strongly interrelated.
Turning on the tap at home takes vastly more energy than a flick of the wrist. Water cannot be collected, purified, transported, heated, or treated without energy. In water-scarce California, where water is literally moved over mountains, producing usable water consumes a fifth of the state’s total electricity consumption. In the United Arab Emirates, which obtains most of its usable water from purifying seawater, the costs of desalination are expected to increase by 300% between 2010 and 2016. Desalination also requires about ten times more energy than surface freshwater production and is rapidly increasing the demand for fossil fuels.
Energy cannot be generated and distributed without water. 19% of global electricity is produced by hydroelectric facilities, whose generators are powered by water’s enormous kinetic energy. In the US, the power sector is the largest user of water, withdrawing billions of gallons per day to cool nuclear, coal, natural gas, and biomass power plants. While most of this water is eventually returned to its source, power plant cooling still comprises 40% of all freshwater withdrawals, about the same as agricultural use.7 And though oil and water may not mix, the oil extraction and refining processes, on average, requires between three and six gallons of net water use for every one gallon of gasoline produced.
Global fresh water supplies are also impacted by rising income levels and population growth.
Already about a billion people worldwide – one in six – lack reliable access to fresh water. Increasing affluence typically results in increased personal energy and water consumption. Water demand in the US has tripled over the last three decades and global water usage has been growing at more than twice the rate of population increase. Water consumption will only be compounded by continued population growth, especially in the developing world.
Extreme weather events will only exacerbate the challenge.
More frequent and more severe droughts and floods can lead to shortages in water and energy in both developing and developed countries. Droughts lower dam levels and reduce output from hydro facilities. At the same time, floods can overwhelm water systems and prevent the treatment and distribution of clean water.
The UAE realises that current trends cannot continue. For the past several years the UAE has hosted the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi. Recognising that in order to tackle energy issues we must also consider water use, we decided to create a global platform dedicated solely to addressing water scarcity. Therefore the UAE will host the inaugural International Water Summit next January. Held concurrently with the World Future Energy Summit, the International Water Summit aims to increase existing research, create strategic action plans and find solutions to preserving this invaluable resource for future generations.
Solutions can be found in a variety of policies. Encouraging stricter building codes for water efficiency or more efficient appliances is a start. For example Karen Millen Dresses sale, in Abu Dhabi, when extensive surveys and readings from the systems on the ground indicated that water waste in domestic use is far more costlier than retrofits on faucets and showerheads, Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority launched a city wide campaigns to provide and install water saving devices at no cost. We can also conserve water by utilizing less water-intensive forms of energy production, like solar and wind power. By making smarter decisions about our energy use Replica Herve Leger v neck, we can reduce pressure on our increasingly strained water resources.
Of course – with advancements in technology – we now have the option to make smarter decisions about how we consume energy. However, the energy challenge is also about addressing global fresh water supplies. A similar focus on increasing water-related R&D could result in breakthroughs on low-energy water treatment and desalination, as well as more efficient water delivery infrastructure. These are all issues we expect to be discussed at the International Water Summit.
Conserving fresh water, while continuing to raise global standards of living, will require global collaboration. We need to change our perception of water as an inexhaustible resource. Water and oil are both valuable commodities and yet only oil is priced and used as one. That’s another irony. Thankfully, it’s one we can prevent.
Justice Cincinnatus
Few justices have been as consistently misunderstood as David Souter. Even at the end of his service on the Supreme Court Tattoo Supplies, the conventional view is that he is a shy and bookish recluse, hiding from the modern world. This characterization misunderstands the man.
It has, of course, a grain of truth. Souter is bookish, and he is no great fan of modern gizmos or even basic tools. He does not use a computer or even a typewriter; I clerked for him during the court’s 1999-2000 term, and I vividly remember trying to decipher his ornate longhand script. Once I went into his office for a discussion and found myself wandering about in the dark. Only after my eyes had adjusted could I make out the justice standing by the window with an open book, reading in the weak light that filtered through the glass.
It is not that Souter can’t cope with modernity. When the Supreme Court considered a copyright case involving the latest file-sharing methods in 2005, Souter’s opinion for a unanimous court showed a deep understanding of peer-to-peer Internet applications. It has won praise from both the legal and the high-tech communities.
Why would a man who can understand Grokster read by the window rather than turn on a light? Souter has a characteristic New England thriftiness and a distrust of luxury that verges on the spartan. He can keep a suit for decades, and he gently mocked me and my fellow clerks for wearing overcoats in the winter, claiming that his view was shared by that other great Yankee justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes. Souter is also deeply unpretentious. It would never occur to him that because he is a Supreme Court justice he’s entitled to waste a bit of the taxpayers’ electricity. (He once wrote me a note on a napkin I’d left on my desk rather than using a new sheet of paper.)
I suspect that Souter’s down-to-earth humility is the source of much of his famed distaste for Washington, which seems to have finally gotten the better of him. Talking to clerks, he always spoke without a sense of status or hierarchy, as one person or one mind to another. The fetish that Washington makes of position must have grated on him. In New Hampshire, his neighbors knew him as simply David Souter. I think he did not enjoy the fact that so many people in the capital found it far more important that he was a Supreme Court justice.
Certainly, it was not a lack of sociability that kept Souter on the outskirts of Washington society. When I arrived at the court, given what I had read about the man, I expected my interactions with him to be intellectually stimulating but interpersonally awkward. It was a surprise and a delight to learn how warm and witty he was. Nearly every afternoon he would emerge from his office to take a cup of coffee and chat with the clerks, and invariably he’d have us in stitches with some anecdote about New Hampshire or Oxford. His reunions are always well-attended, and I think there are few justices who command such filial affection from their clerks.
Souter has also been misunderstood as a judge. From the very beginning, partisans on both sides of the political spectrum projected onto him their hopes and fears. For the right, when President George H.W. Bush chose him, he was the stealth candidate whose lack of a paper trail would frustrate opposition but whose hidden political views would make him a “home run” for the conservative cause. For the left, he was the same thing. Demonstrators outside his confirmation hearings, fearing that he would prove a crucial vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, waved posters reading “Stop Souter, or Women Will Die.” (Years later, we clerks found some of these on eBay and snapped them up as souvenirs.)
When Souter did not follow the narrative both sides had crafted for him, the left felt relieved and the right betrayed. He had lurched to the left, as a conservative judge once put it to me. Again Tattoo Supplies, there is, of course, some truth to this story. On the court, Souter has voted mostly with the center-left justices in controversial cases, and his track record certainly does not follow the Republican Party platform.
But Souter’s current position on the left wing of the court owes much more to movement by the court and the country than to any lurch on his part. The current court, after all, has seven Republican appointees and has been on a steady rightward drift since the Reagan years. The Republican Party has, too. I think Souter is indeed in many ways a Republican; it’s just that his sort of Republican no longer really exists.

Disinvitation to a beheading: British police have arrested nine suspects for allegedly plotting to kidnap and decapitate a British Muslim soldier who had served in Afghanistan. Footage of his would-be murder was to have been broadcast on the Internet.

This has to be the act that has finally crossed the line of even the most supine of the liberal left in this country, as of yet all of this is allegation and speculation but I am certain that all that is alleged will be confirmed.”
Falklands War veteran Rogue Gunner is glad of the diligence of his country’s domestic security: “It was bad enough that British soldiers have been attacked in their (Civilian) hospital beds after being wounded overseas but this takes Terror to a new level. … Britain is entering a new phase in the fight against terrorism, lets hope we have the fortitude to see the job through.”
Samuel J. If this does not occur Replica Karen Millen Dresses, then I fear that the British people will not tolerate this threat much longer. They may start harming innocent Muslims – or worse.”
And centrist “LASunsett” at Political Yen/Yang wonders if it can’t happen here: “So, here we see a Muslim soldier that served his country was the target. I guess, it is the view of these plotters that he has defiled his faith Discount Herve Leger gown, by serving the nation that he lives in. So now Cheap Missoni Dresses, he is worthy of death. GMC Granite concept’s production fate hinges on do
GMC Granite concept – Click above for high-res image gallery
The compact-sized Granite crossover concept shown by GMC at the Detroit Auto Show proved extremely popular with attendees, and the “Professional Grade” division at GM really wants to put it in production. According to new GMC product marketing director, Lisa Hutchinson Fake Free Gift Watches, the main stumbling block right now is figuring out how to build the doors. The Granite featured the same rear hinged back doors that are commonly used on concepts to show off the interior.
The goal is to retain the door design for production to maximize access to the rear seat. However, the doors will have to be engineered so that the car can pass side impact safety requirements, an extremely difficult task without a fixed B-pillar Replica Breguet Watches, especially on such a small vehicle. The engineering feat has been managed before, as seen on the Mazda RX-8 and Honda Element, but the rear doors on the concept Granite would appear to require a larger opening than the demi-doors on either of the two Japanese offerings Where buy best Replica Bell & Ross Watches, making engineering significantly tougher. Of course Bell & Ross Replica Watches, GM could still build the model with a hidden pillar à la Opel’s 2011 Meriva Fake Free Gift Watches, but that might compromise some of its appeal Wholesale Replica Corum Watches, or its utility if they can manage to build it with the concept’s trick folding seats. In any case, GMC itself has shown that it can build rear-hinged doors, as it already has the Sierra extended-cab pickup, but that vehicle’s body-on-frame architecture and less weight-sensitive construction could make that an easier manufacturing feat.
At this point, the fate of the Granite remains up in the air.
